I have seen a lot of online reviews about the Tokina 16-50mm lens and it appears that a lot of people are divided over this one. I am not a professional photographer so all the technical details that most reviews list is lost on me but what I do know is that I have been getting some very good shots with this lens. I rarely print out any of my photos but I do view them on a high definition computer monitor and I have yet to see anything bad. His family moved to Port Elizabeth in 1927 bringing Alexander with them. Talented from a very young age, Alexander began his art studies in Art School of the Port Elizabeth Technical College. His teachers at the time were Francis Pickford and Jack Heath. Ross-Innes was not able to pursue painting, his life’s passion straight away. Due to financial constraints he took up a job as an apprentice sign-writer and painted during free time. When the Second World War broke in the 1940, he joined the army and was sent to battle field. He was in the army for five years till the war ended and was stationed in Pretoria, Kimberley and Cape Town.After the war, Ross- Innes wanted to pursue a career in art and began to realise that it is high time that he made a head start on it. So in 1956, 41 year old Alexander Ross-Innes embarked on a journey that led him to accomplishment and fame. Arriving in Cape Town, he met several of his contemporary artists at the time. While working in Neon-Fluorescent Company as a sign writer, he befriended the curator of Michaelis Collection, Matthys Bokhurst. Under the mentorship of Bokhurst, Ross-Innes did his first public exhibition on 1958, after several group exhibitions.After the success of his first exhibition he spent a few years silently painting. In 1963 he emerged again on the artistic scene in Cape Town. This time he was a part of Group exhibition at the South African Association of Arts Gallery along with artists like, Ruth Prowse, David Botha, Gregoire Boonzaier, Carl Büchner, Nerine Desmond and Frank Spears. In the following years his paintings went on display in numerous art exhibitions. In 1986, the University of Pretoria awarded him with a medal for his contribution to the art scene of South Africa. In celebration of his work, the university also conducted a retrospective art exhibition.Unlike his fellow artists, who excelled in capturing the South African landscapes, Ross-Inns’ favourite theme was scenes from daily life. His paintings showed many different themes involving ordinary men and women. Portraits of common people such as, blacksmiths and fishermen at work, domestic interiors and various other scenes from people’s daily life is captured with amazing accuracy. His works showed deep intimacy towards his subjects. I was initially surprised to find that the Tamron 18-200mm lens is able to perform at such a level above the expected one for this make and model of lens. The all plastic construction is well made and the grip is good. Everything is well damped and lightweight. The zoom lock button is useful to prevent zoom creep. This is a nice feature to have but I do not think it is really necessary. The hood is adequate enough for most purposes.
